Articulate Rise example for product training

Project background:

Partnered with a leading creative design studio to build a creative, mobile first learning solution that was part of an entire ecosystem of user experience, content and support for a new product launch in the pharmaceutical space. The end client was a global pharmaceutical brand, the specific product and brand are protected IP covered by NDA for an active project so won’t be specifically mentioned here.

For the example itself shared below, all proprietary content has been removed and changed the product entirely so it bears no resemblance to the original. For the most part I have used lorem ipsum placeholder text, but added a few lines here and there to provide context for the made-up product I’ve used in the example.

Tools used:

  • Articulate Rise
  • Articulate Storyline
  • Adapt authoring tool
  • Opigno LMS

As part of the design and define stage of the project – I was tasked with developing some test environments in the LMS, setting up the course structure etc and some initial test SCORM content as a proof of concept. For these demos I used Articulate Storyline to develop a realistic practice activity which was a system simulation where the learner needed to perform the actual steps they would perform in real life on the actual product. This was embedded as an activity into both Adapt authoring tool and Articulate Rise (which is the example shared here – albeit changed significantly from the original, including removal of the embedded Storyline element).

Job roles performed:

  • Learning Consultant / strategist
  • Curriculum designer
  • Instructional designer
  • E-learning developer

Solution:

This was a large, complex project which required an end to end service. I initially provided consultancy services and strategic advice during the RFP stage with the end client, where there were some critical questions around the initial instructional design approach and scope which required expert advice. My guidance led to the RFP being approved and the project being funded.

Taking source content from subject matter experts which varied from a 500 page manual (!) to old learning resources, to classroom based resources and supporting brand assets, I created the training curriculum for the entire experience. This was a complex process, and involved working closely with SMEs to agree the most critical content.

I took this rough content, training aims and some objectives, and put them through a couple of rigorous processes to ensure we had a consistent curriculum. This included applying “Bloom’s taxonomy” to the objectives, and using the “action mapping” process to draw out the key actionable learning we wanted to include, and reduce the amount of “nice to know” material into just the essential “need to know” content. From this, I then created formative and summative assessment criteria, alongside the realistic practice activities which are a key element of the action mapping process in order to apply the learning. This curriculum formed the basis for everything onwards.

I then worked with the wider team to create the learning experience, we had copywriters working on the lesson content scripts, and wider team working on the UX design and website functionality. My focus remained on the instructional design oversight, and supporting by developing and testing some initial content, including the demo shared here. My recommendations, from the curriculum to the demos all shaped the final solution. The final product was taken forward internally at the agency, and development is currently underway. I was later called back to support on a similar project at the same agency for the same client.
